Painted "Buffalo
Roam" 2008 Events
Buffalo Roam To Winter Pasture
It’s been a wonderful summer for the painted buffalo of West
Yellowstone who have adorned the streets of our town and have been
admired, touched and photographed by thousands of visitors. Over
7,500 treasure trail maps were given out to those who filled out the
trivia questions as they walked around town following the “painted
buffalo trail”. As colder months approach, some buffalo will roam to
inside quarters such as the IMAX, Madison Crossing and the West Park
Mall where they can be seen throughout the winter. Others will move
to inside the individual sponsor’s businesses while some will
migrate to winter pasture and wait for spring to return.
Spring Calf Crop
Spring is the time for baby calves in Yellowstone Country. West
Yellowstone is not to be outdone. A crop of 10 calves is going
through the gestation period right now. This process includes the
making of a wax model, followed by the fabrication of a Styrofoam
sculpture and then onto a full-size fiberglass statue. The next step
is painting by the artist, followed by a protective clear coating.
The unveiling of the new calves will be on the lawn of the
Yellowstone Historic Center in West Yellowstone on June 14, 2008.
The new calf statues will be located at various locations in West
Yellowstone as well as inside Yellowstone National Park. Each calf
will stand approx. 28 inches tall. Some will be used as accents for
our “Buffalo Roam” merchandising displays.
Big Spring 2008 Events
Here’s what will be happening along the Buffalo Trail in West
Yellowstone, Montana during the spring and summer of 2008.
Our cows will remain in their winter quarters until spring. The new
calves will be fabricated and then painted by the selected artists
with a return to West Yellowstone by the spring of 2008.
Spring and summer 2008 dates to watch for include:
June 8-15, 2008 - All cows will migrate from their wintering
grounds and will be corralled for one week on the lawn of the West
Yellowstone Historic Center.

June 11, 2008 – The annual “Train Days” celebration held at the
West Yellowstone Historic Center will enjoy the 26 painted buffalo
on the lawn of the museum for all to see.

June 13-15, 2008 – An expanded Art Show is planned in the
historic Union Pacific Dining Lodge in West Yellowstone featuring
northwest regional art and artists. It is rumored that a bull named
“Henry” will be arriving during the festivities so that the
participating artists can produce a collage painting similar to the
creation of “Frances” in 2007. Be sure to plan to come and watch
“Henry” receive his colors.

June 14, 2008 – The unveiling of the new “painted calves” is
scheduled to occur on the lawn of the West Yellowstone Historic
Center. At this event, last year’s cows and the new calves will be
assigned to sponsors for the 2008 summer season. Be sure to watch
for these as well as other exciting events and entertainment to be
held on this day.

June 15, 2008 - All cows and calves will “roam” to their new
2008 homes for the summer season. |
